LAP-BAND® Surgery in the Atlanta Metro Area
Our offices provide Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery in the Metro Atlanta area. The FDA approved LAP-BAND® in 2001, and since then, over 190,000 patients have received the procedure.
Obese patients tend to prefer LAP-BAND® to other surgical options for weight loss because it is:
Safe
Most weight loss surgeries are safe, with very low-risk factors
Effective
Numerous clinical trials have proven that LAP-BAND® helps patients achieve weight loss and can help reduce related conditions such as diabetes.
Non-permanent
Removal of LAP-BAND is possible, if needed, in contrast to other procedures which modify the digestive tract permanently.
Minimally Invasive
The procedure requires only a few small incisions and is the least invasive weight loss surgery.
How Does LAP-BAND® Work?
LAP-BAND® is one of several surgical procedures approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for obesity. Rather than creating a bypass in your digestive tract, LAP-BAND® does not re-route part of your digestive system.
Rather, we place a constrictive band around your stomach which limits how much it can expand, and therefore the amount of food you can eat.
Weight loss surgery is often a “last resort” for people who have tried everything to lose weight. However, an increasing body of medical research evidence suggests that procedures like LAP-BAND® may provide patients with their best option for losing weight, since it has been proven to be both safe and effective.
Is LAP-BAND® Surgery for Me?
If you have already tried dieting, exercise, behavioral therapy, and weight loss drugs and yet have not been able to lose weight successfully; then adjustable gastric banding surgery could be for you.
If you have been struggling with weight-related conditions such as joint pain, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure, you could benefit from LAP-BAND weight loss surgery.
Additionally, if you have been unable to maintain healthy body weight for a sustained period, despite trying medically supervised dieting, you may see results from LAP-BAND® bariatric surgery.
Who is Eligible for Lap Band?
To qualify for LAP-BAND® surgery, you will need to have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or above, or above 30 if you suffer from a condition like hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease, or diabetes.
To be eligible for bariatric (weight loss) surgery in general, you will need to be between 16 and 70 years old and at least 100 pounds over your ideal body weight, with a BMI of 40 or above.
If you meet the above conditions, you may be an ideal candidate for LAP-BAND® surgery. Contact our office today to book a consultation!
Is There a Removal of LAP-BAND After I Reach My Goal Weight?
It is common for patients to be curious as to whether they may have their LAP-BAND® removed after reaching their goal weight.
While gastric banding is technically a reversible procedure, doctors do not usually recommend having the procedure reversed after reaching your goal weight.
This helps you to prevent relapsing and gaining back the weight after the LAP-BAND® surgery and therefore helps you maintain a healthier weight long-term.
How Will My Diet Be Affected If I Get LAP-BAND® Surgery?
It is helpful to think of getting LAP-BAND® surgery as part of your cohesive weight loss strategy. Part of that strategy involves eating healthy foods and avoiding foods that provide little to no nutritional value.
You will also be eating foods that are easy on your digestive tract after your gastric banding procedure, to help ease your recovery process. Each of these changes will help maximize the success of your procedure and weight loss.
Will My Diet Need to Change Before Getting LAP-BAND® Surgery?
Before your gastric LAP-BAND surgery, you will need to eat healthier and avoid junk foods. You will need to make these changes to your diet in preparation for the surgery, to help you achieve your weight loss results.
Some of the foods you will need to remove from your diet before your LAP-BAND® surgery are:
- Bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice
- Chips, pretzels, crackers or any other high-carb snacks
- Cakes, pies, cookies, candy or other sugar-sweetened foods
- Soft drinks and full-strength fruit juices
- Saucy, fried, breaded, processed, and fast foods
What Will My Diet Be Like After LAP-BAND® Surgery?
After your surgery, you will need to follow some simple, but important, food and drink guidelines. Eventually, you will eat three full, healthy, nutritious meals each day and avoid snacking in between meals.
During the first couple of weeks after your procedure, you will not be eating the usual foods. Your diet will consist of only liquid foods for at least the first week afterward, and only pureed foods for up to two weeks.
After those two weeks are up, you can gradually work up to re-introducing regular, healthy foods.
The Results of a Healthier Lifestyle Are Well Worthwhile
Overall, it comes down to eating a balanced diet which incorporates mini meals and making a conscious effort to avoid problematic foods. Living your new lifestyle, like that after LAP-BAND® surgery, may require some dedication, but the results that come with it are worthwhile.
